Group sues U.S. in push for new antibiotic warning

Thu Jan 3, 2008

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A consumer group asked a U.S. court on Thursday to force regulators to decide if stronger warnings should be added to certain antibiotics to alert doctors and patients about the risks of tendon rupture.

The antibiotics -- widely prescribed for gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract infections -- include Johnson & Johnson's Levaquin and Bayer AG's Cipro and Avelox. Cipro also is sold by generic companies under the name ciprofloxacin.

All are members of a class called fluoroquinolones.

In August 2006, consumer group Public Citizen petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to add a "black box" warning, the strongest type available for prescription drugs, to fluoroquinolones about the risk of tendon injury and rupture.

The possibility of tendon rupture is now mentioned in the drug's prescribing instructions, but the warning "is buried in a long list of possible adverse reactions and is far too easy to miss," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group.

Stronger warnings could lead patients to switch to other antibiotics soon after tendon pain develops and before the tendon ruptures, the group argued in a complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Public Citizen also argued that the FDA was violating federal law by not ruling on the petition. The agency said in February 2007 it had not yet reached a decision because the petition raised complex issues requiring extensive review, according to Public Citizen.

"While the FDA sits idly by and ignores the problem, more people will suffer serious tendon ruptures that could have been prevented," Wolfe said.

The FDA has received 336 reports of tendon rupture in patients treated with fluoroquinolones from November 1997 through March 2007, Public Citizen said. The actual number is likely higher because only a fraction of potential side effects are typically reported to the agency.

Officials at the FDA and Johnson & Johnson had no immediate comment. A Bayer spokeswoman could not immediately be reached.

YOU KNOW THAT YOU SPEND AT LEAST $6.00 "EVERY PAY
PERIOD" ON USELESS STUFF, ME TOO. SO I THOUGHT, WHAT THE HECK, I'M GOING TO TRY ONE OF THESE "SCAMS". NOW TO MY AMAZEMENT, I AM CHUCKLING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK WEEK AFTER WEEK WITH My PILES OF 1$ BILLS. I AM HAVING FUN AT THE SAME TIME AND WISHING THAT I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS SOONER! THIS IS LONG, SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT ALL NOW, JUST "COPY AND PASTE", IT IS
SOOO WORTH IT! DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, JUST TRY IT!
How to turn $6 into $6,000!
READING THIS COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE! SO JUST DO IT! This really works!
Hello, I’m like a lot of others out there who have
financial woes and I decided to try something new. If it works for me then I will be able to get myself out of a very difficult financial situation. Please read and see what results another got, it's pretty exciting!
It REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WORKS!!!
BUT YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO THE LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!!
I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with
only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought,
"Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands)
No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... Within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works.... Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something
so easy!
Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully!
(Print it out or download it.)
Follow the simple directions and watch the money
come in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage)
IMPORTANT: This is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business.
In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. however, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income, which is made from people like you and me asking to
be included in that list.
Here are the 3 easy steps to success:
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper
"PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST."
Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying
for it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1) D.Blakeman 7400 Glenleaf #179 Shreveport, LA 71129
#2) J.maxey 355 N. Manilla, Fresno, CA. 93727
#3) C. Lyons P.O. Box 69645 Los Angeles, CA. 90069-0645
#4) RJ K. Murpay 850 E. Walnut #173 Grapevine, Tx 76051
#5) Candice Messinger 5216 Old Powell rd. Holly Springs, NC 27540
#6) Tim DeMeerleer 105 N. Main st.Rear Kennett, MO 63857
STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list.
STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups)All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make!
This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at
it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way.
NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service.
(Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.)
So, as each post is downloaded and the directions
carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your
name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above)
Send it now, add your own name to the list and you're in business!
---DIRECTIONS -----
FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer’s memory.

Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can
add your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the
header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one!
Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200**
That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it.
**JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT. **
HOW IT WORKS:
Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example).
So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $625.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the
latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are
joining the Internet and reading these articles everyday? JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when
there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the Internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work. God bless you!

SYNOPSIS

How are large drug companies benefiting from the latest trend of selling powerful psychoactive drugs to America's children? Do these drugs really help our children cure symptoms of supposed mental illness, or do they tend to increase depression, violence, and suicide? Are we really treating the root causes of mental illness, or are we just eliminating annoying symptoms?

This feature-length documentary examines the alarming growth in the prescription of powerful psychotropic drugs for adolescents and children. Leading experts, as well as Neil Bush, Michael Moore and Gary Null, provide insightful commentary about the growing trend to pathologize the behavior of children, and then require them to take mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs as a "cure." The documentary recounts the national tragedy of Columbine and focuses on the largely unknown fact that teenage shooter Eric Harris was on the psychotropic drug Luvox at the time he and Dylan Klebold took the lives of 13 other students at their high school. Violence and aggression, precipitated by prescribed drug use, is also explored in an unprecedented discussion between Mark Taylor, the first shooting victim in the Columbine tragedy, and Cory Baadsgard, a teenager on Paxil and Effexor who, in another violent incident, took his teacher and 23 students hostage at gunpoint in his Washington high school. The film proceeds to show the dangerous links between psychotropic drugs like Paxil, Luvox, Effexor and Prozac – commonly prescribed to adolescents for anxiety, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - and the increased incidents of violence, suicide and psychotic behavior often observed in those children and adolescents who are taking the drugs. The film also provides compelling personal accounts, including a mother going to prison and losing her son to government authorities because she refused to give her son psychiatric drugs. Leading medical authorities and mental health professionals speak the unvarnished truth about current increased diagnoses of recently devised mental illnesses and the unprecedented prescription of a host of very powerful psychoactive drugs to "treat" them. Finally, this documentary explores safer, alternative methods for treating childhood mental illness.

The other day she asked me why I didn't cook and clean all the time like moms on TV. After recovering from the shock of this question, I explained that moms today don't have time to clean all the time, because we have too many other important things to do. This got to thinking about how I clean - I realized that as a working mom I only clean when it's going to be fast! Which is probably why I use Endust all the time. It's a good, quick clean that leaves me time to do the more important things in life. If you’re anything like me, then I’d recommend it, cause unlike what our children may think, we can't all be June Clevers.

The only thing is, I don’t have time to dust and clean everything so it looks perfect. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to clean fast?

Hey fellow desperate parents,

I just found this awesome website that sells a download of "white noise" to help your baby stop crying and get back to sleep. www.thewhitenoisealbum.com I read (like most of you have I'm sure) "The Happiest Baby on the Block" and there's all this stuff about using white noise to get your colicky baby to stop crying, but when I went to the book's website the CD is like $15!!! I just couldn't reason myself into paying that much for a CD of "white noise"... I mean come on people, it's white noise. Then I found this awesome site that has a really affordable solution. It's an album called "The WHITE NOISE ALBUM" and if you're a Beatles fan you'll get a kick out of it because it looks just like "The White Album"... get it? anyhow, for $4.99 you can download a full hour of white noise, then either burn it to a CD or play it on your iPod. The website says you can get it at Barnes and Noble too, so if you're by the Grove, see if they have it!

Anyhow, this thing is a lifesaver! Stops Donovan's crying and he's back to sleep in a few minutes, and it keeps him from waking up from random noises in my apartment. Plus I started using it while I sleep too! It covers up the sounds of my neighbor's TV like a dream, and now we both can get to sleep.

Just go to www.thewhitenoisealbum.com

So Im from beautiful Southern California and I have been a "Domestic Engineer" for approximatley 1 year and a few months. It was by accident that I started my stay-at-home career. I was fired from my job after being absent for a little over a week due to injuries I sustained from a major car accident. Work was so crazy that I put it before myself. I returned long before I should have. When I returned to work I noticed $800 missing from my safe and unfortunaltely they held me responsible. I dont know where they got their logic, but later a Judge ruled the case in my favor. So anyhow, it was actually a blessing in disguise. My baby daughter was 15 mos.

I have been at home playing wifey since then. Ok, enough about that. Im here and happy to be. Nice to meet you all.

The only problem is that our families have made it a little more difficult for us to get married when we were planning (Oct. 2007). We're both 18, but I'm still relying on my parents at this point for financial support (being that I'm in college) and he's leaving for basic at the beginning of next month.
If we're married then we will have no problem with the medical bills for pregnancy and birth as well as for later on. Now my problem is how to convince my parents to allow us to get married, so that our children are not born out of wedlock.
Neither of us are religious, and I'd like to be a homemaker so I won't be loosing sleep over not having a "real" job as everyone calls it. But I think that the hardest job there is is being a full-time mom and wife.
Anyway, does anyone have any advice for me I'm a little lost as to how I should feel and what I should do or say to my parents.

I am a newbie! I am a 23yr. old SAH mom from PA. (originally from Idaho) I have 3 wonderful sons....i posted their pic in the album.....Trinidy was born Feb. 15, 2000, Athan was born 11/12/2003 and little Kylar was born 3/3/2005. My kids are my world. I enjoy being a sah mom but i think sometimes it drives me insane??? Is that wrong to think that? I mean, I love being able to raise my kids and not have to pay someone else to do it for me, but I also feel like I am a prisoner in my house. It is so difficult to go places, especially during the day with 2 little ones by myself. (my oldest son lives with his dad in Idaho) and then by the time my hubby gets home from work he is tired and it's almost dinner time. I tell people that my computer is my only connection to the outside world and they think I am joking! anyway, i look forward to chatting with everyone. have a great day!

Hello, Jay and Shelley here,
Got some new exciting information for you - have a read!

As you know - my "big picture" is to eliminate expenses through healthy choices with a consumable product. It is true, I have been researching a company over the past 4 months after first being exposed to them at the Health symposium in the latter of 2004.

Shelley and I have decided to add it to our expense elimination program for the following reasons:
1) It is an amazing substitution to products we purchase weekly and highly consumable.
2) The products are highly versatile and create a very healthy environment for our home and bodies.
3) The testimonials are incredible both here in Canada and the US ( I witnessed it firsthand at the Richmond Private Golf & Country Club at a hosted event by the top Canadian Distributor)
4) The products replace the following products we use daily ( which by the way may have harmful ingredients such as Propylene Glycol, DEA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Alcohol, Aluminum, Talc and many more. Here are the everyday products they replace:
a) Body soap, hand soap, bath soap,
b) toothpaste
c) Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturizer ( body, face )
d) First Aid applications, Sunburn applications,
e) Greens products and Flax products
f) Laundry soap, Dish soap
g) Body deodorant, under arm deodorant
h) House cleaners, auto cleaners
and the list goes on........

To sum up: Many applications with health and safety paramount, very exciting, lateral spending from purchases we make weekly, monthly etc. ( no new added expense! ) with the ability to reduce everyones expenses, increase vitality and overall health and create a healthy harmonious home & body environment, only in the US and Canada presently and ofcourse fits in with Shelley and I's Expense Elimination Program we have implemented for 2005.

Footnote: I polled a few of my most sceptical friends that have always looked down on products such as this and here is the responses I received:

"Jay, from all the products you have shown us - these products interest us because it just makes sense"

"Shelley and Jay, you've really hit something big with this - we're definitely looking at this product line for our family and home"

"We're interested! When can we have a look at this website!"

"My wife who absolutely has no time for these products but is considering this line because of it's logic and the lateral spending of monies we spend already with the opportunity to get it really healthy as we progress in age"

I think you will agree that this has the potential to serve your body in a way we have never tapped into before, it's not a fad or a trend just a healthy solution to live in a very non-toxic environment.

If you check out www.JaysVentures.com you will see it partnered up with our Xango Juice nutritional line - a fine addition.
i'm new to this tribe... but i saw the topic while looking for a twins tribe and thought hell, that's me!

so here's the story: 2, yes 2 unplanned pgs (with the same guy) and the second resulted in twins! yikers, i'm 25 and i have 3 boys (well okay, 4 boys :D ) under the age of 3!

and i don't know about you all, but i'm the ONLY one of my friends with kids. so this mommy thing has been a hard adjustment. i just don't have anything in common with my friends anymore. i had to temporarily quit my dream of nursing school, i don't get to go shopping anymore, and i find the most exciting thing in my "workweek" is when i find huggies on sale at ralphs.

the good thing is that i just moved to a neighborhood where there are 3 neighbors, all with young kids. we've organized some fun field trips like the aquarium, beach, picnics and stuff.

but i miss my old friends, know what i mean? the ones that are career-driven, own homes, and can afford to go on weekend trips. the ones that i know by the time they start "planning" their families, my kids will probably be in junior high.

makes you feel like you missed out on something, doesn't it? but would i trade it for all the freedom and shoe-shopping sprees in the world?

So I look around thinking maybe she just rolled away or something, so shes no where in the room. Ok I panicked, I'm just standing there looking around not knowing where she is, but knowing that she can open the doors, I'm looking aroung and calling my husband, I went in there to wake him up, and who is laying there at the foot of my bed. My child! If I wasnt so relieved I believe I would've hurt her.
